Cat Adoption Success Checklist

A Quick Reference for New Adopters

Before You Bring Your Cat Home

  • Set up a quiet “safe room” with a door

  • Place food, water, and litter box in separate areas

  • Prepare a cozy hiding spot (bed, box, or covered crate)

  • Stock essentials: food, litter, litter scoop, bowls, scratching post

  • Remove hazards (toxic plants, loose cords, small objects)

  • Choose a veterinarian if you don’t already have one

Health & Wellness

  • Schedule a vet visit if not already completed

  • Monitor eating, drinking, and litter box habits

  • Watch for sneezing, diarrhea, or lethargy

  • Expect reduced appetite or litter box use at first

  • Do not introduce other pets yet

Environment & Enrichment

  • Provide scratching options (vertical and horizontal)

  • Offer toys that encourage natural hunting behavior

  • Create vertical spaces like shelves or cat trees

  • Rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom

Remember...

If you have questions or concerns, the Hope 4 Paws Humane Society team is here to support you and your cat every step of the way.
