Lights of Remembrance is a beloved annual tradition at Hope 4 Paws Humane Society, created to honor the deep, lasting bond we share with the animals who have touched our lives.
Each December, our community comes together to remember pets—both living and deceased—by lighting a memorial tree. Every light represents a cherished companion, a story of love, and a life that will never be forgotten.
Honor Your Pet’s Memory
When you dedicate a Light of Remembrance, you are:
- Honoring a pet who has crossed the rainbow bridge
- Celebrating a beloved companion still by your side
- Sharing their name and legacy with our community
Each dedication includes:
- Your name and your pet’s name listed on the Lights of Remembrance roster on our website
- The opportunity to attend a heartfelt tree-lighting ceremony
- The knowledge that your tribute helps support the animals currently in our care
This event is open to all—whether your pet came from Hope 4 Paws or not.
How It All Began
When you dedicate a Light of Remembrance, you are:
Lights of Remembrance began in 1992, founded by Sandra Campbell, Chairperson and visionary behind what was then known as the Tree of Love (TOL).
Originally created as a grassroots fundraising effort for the Somerset County Humane Society in Branchburg, New Jersey, the project reflected a simple but powerful idea: honoring beloved pets while helping animals in need.
As the program grew, it evolved into Lights of Remembrance, Inc. (LOR), expanding its reach to support two shelters—one of which was Hope 4 Paws Humane Society.
In 2004, in an extraordinary act of generosity, Sandra and Barry Campbell, along with the board of LOR, Inc., entrusted the entire Lights of Remembrance program to Hope 4 Paws Humane Society. From that moment on, Hope 4 Paws became the sole beneficiary and proud owner of Lights of Remembrance.
Today, every contribution made through Lights of Remembrance directly supports the animals cared for by Hope 4 Paws—continuing a legacy built on compassion, community, and love.
Emily’s Tree & The Ceremony
Emily was a devoted volunteer whose compassion, generosity, and love for animals left a permanent mark on Hope 4 Paws. In her honor, the Lights of Remembrance ceremony is held every year on December 6, Emily’s birthday.
The lighting ceremony takes place on the grounds of the Plainfield shelter around a very special tree known as Emily’s Tree.
The evening is quiet, reflective, and deeply moving—a space for remembrance, gratitude, and community.
